About The Artwork

Free as a Bird aims to question: Do we live in a captivating society or a society of captives? In Free as a Bird I challenge contemporary views of happiness and success. Our current model for happiness is to work harder, have success, and then happiness will ensue. However, once success is achieved the bar is pushed further. In our culture, “success” seems to be recognised most prominently with two features: income and status, particularly in one’s career. The quest for a dream life has left most of us trapped within “prisons of our own making”. By chasing and displaying things we believe bring us status, we end up constraining our options. What we thought was going to help us triumph, ends up being the mechanism that smothers us. This can leave us feeling trapped as the decision to change certain aspects of our lives becomes fear-inducing. My paintings reflects my deep understanding of human and life. The figures I paint depict scenes of social and or psychological significance. I use Personification of animals in order to separate the figures from the reality, so to allow a safe space for the audience to feel represented but not over-identified with the subject, as this can leave the spectator vulnerable. I also like to add a touch of humor. My paintings are primarily figurative and delivered in a classical manner. They are emotive and expressionistic in its content.

Originally from Spain. I have been living in Ireland for over 20 years. I have been creating art in many ways since childhood. Constantly learning and practicing techniques, Initially as an acrylic painter, I developed a passion for oils in recent years. I attended some Classic Atelier training, which has informed my process and given me the tools to develop my body of work. However, I consider myself a mostly self-taught artist. I have worked in healthcare for many years, this role has been a great source of inspiration. It involves embracing people’s uniqueness, actively listening to what is said while carefully observing the subject, in order to understand people’s lives experiences holistically. It is this genuine interest and compassion for all beings that encourages me to create art with meaning. I paint to connect people with themselves and others through the process of reflection and shared emotions. Frequently adding humour to my pieces, to create that shared experience between spectators. My aim is that my art speaks clearly of my fascination for life. Painting allows me to take a moment to translate my views, vision or ideas into something others can see as a wonderful thing, art that speaks to you and brings you joy. In later works I have started to use aluminium composite panels as my chosen surface. My painting process involves carefully building up layers of translucent, semi-opaque oil glazes over an opaque monochromatic underpainting. As much as I like the completion of a piece, I thoroughly enjoy the process, I’m not an impulsive painter. I’m a planner, I carefully research, test, rethink, scrap when needed and adopt a mindset of enjoying the process and encourage curiosity. The process always leads me to gaining valuable insights and many breakthroughs. At times when I am not fully satisfied with results I retry pieces.
