About The Artwork

This picture is a reference to work of a Polish composer Witold Lutosławski. Games de Venice (Jeux vénitiens) written in 1961 were a breakthrough in Lutosławski's work. The composition was created as a result of searching for a new form of music language. He was inspired by the idea applied by John Cage - the introduction to the music as an element of randomness - aleatorism. Aleatorism led to the complete decomposition of traditional music systems and forms. In my painting, the forms are kind of random, and yet they do not break the composition. This paining refers to the tradition of stained glass rosettes but through the randomness of the form (rectangle) and texture it becomes more contemporary. The title of the composition Games of Venice (Jeux vénitiens) (1961) by Witold Lutosławski is associated - according to the composer himself - only with the place of the first performance of the composition which took place on April 24, 1961 at the festival "Venice Biennale".
