Art Description

Painting: Oil on Canvas.

My goal with this work was to play with the lesser-understood idea of worship. There are plenty of things under the sun in which people collectively or individually worship without knowing. In this case it is the so-called idolatry of money. Until recently, the very questioning of capitalism has been interpreted as heresy and unpatriotic in certain segments of our society.
Since the nature of the koan is to be seen as diametrically opposing ideas, I have a tendency to layer the nuances in the viewer's interpretation of the image. The ego wishes to benefit from a calamity. The spirit wishes only for what it is: forgiveness. The man kneeling on the pier could be viewed as worshiping money or surrendering his worldly attachments in prostration to a higher deity. It could go either way depending upon the perception of the viewer. It is a call towards forgiveness or towards the ego's teachings. The title, God Prophet, is an intentional homonym by design, prophet sounds like profit.
