ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Imagine that moment when you jump into the deep end of the pool and realize you're going under! Or perhaps going into surgery and the anesthesiologist asks you to start counting backwards. All the colors of your reality come together as the sedation envelops your consciousness and blackness is your new reality although you don't know it. Upon spewing that nasty chlorinated pool water or opening your eyes as if you were reborn, there is the first glimmer of light, and you're grateful to be alive. "Going Under" is my expression of a journey that I was somewhat reluctant to take. Rather than using a black straight out of the tube, I mixed a black from Ultramarine Blue and Van Dyke Brown. I then used those colors separately in the painting along with Prussian Blue and Indian Yellow, and Zinc White.

Jerry Hardesty was born and raised in Osawatomie, Kansas. In addition to being an Artist, he is a former teacher and also a Trainer and Manager in Corporate America. Hardesty is an Abstract Expressionist Painter. His current work is based on experimentation with color and texture as it relates to various themes, including emotions, jazz, street art and found abstracts. Blending saturated colors and applying resin are his favorite techniques along with incor- porating unique surfaces to produce textural depth and movement in his paintings. Hardesty relishes his alone time in the studio and likes to paint to the sounds of raspy sax and repetitive percussive beats of jazz. Hardesty has a Bachelor of Arts degree and has studied with a number of local artists. Nonetheless, he believes he is primarily self-taught. He paints in both acrylic and oil. Each layer is a response to the previous layer. Hardesty resides in Salt Lake City with his wife. They have three adult children and six grandchildren.
