About The Artwork

Black Mereki is the title of this series, Meriki is a Greek word which means "soul". It was intentionally made to have questions come to the mind of whoever peruses it. You want to know what Black Mereki stands for? Then, you are concerned about the questions of the things that revolve around the lives of the Negro, their struggles, way of life, pain, condemnations, their contemporary survival mechanisms, and the global acrimony against them, it tries to say these all. Year in year out, the narrative refuses to change. And when we record some changes, it is deterioration. The narrative of this series may seem to be intending to paint victimhood and victimization, but it is not the only aim, but the resilience of the black man despite all the odds, the bright side, way forward, and an exposition of the necessity of the blacks in the completion of humanity and some of its needs. This is as a result of my belief in duality; as to have the whole, we need to bring the two extremes together for a complete story. In making these pieces, I employed the use of mixed media and also the application of acrylics on canvas. As said earlier, I gave The Black Mereki life for the Negro, due to the odds and tides in their favor. It should be noticed too, that in the titles of each work, a word from the phrases of each title would have a variant of the color of the Negro. This is an indication of a narrative about the Negro. Something you would love to listen to. These works preaches love, without mentioning love or using it as a verb. I would like to state that this series is a personal piece whose intent is beyond artistic gratification or financial remuneration. I made it out of concern, for a universal audience, through the desire to assist a people, and my own race seeking acceptance. I understand that for a story to travel, the first thing that needs to happen is for it to be told, and someone to tell the story helps the world to cut corners; for stories, are learning avenues that permits one not to necessarily be its participant before it would have impacts on our lives. Whoever would have in their possession the Black Mereki would be holding my torch, telling the world my observation. Helping me. Helping the Negroes.

Adegoke Damilola Ephraim, best known as E.d Adegoke is a professional Artist studying Visual and Performing Arts at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State. He was born on the 10th of November 1998. He hails from Ilesha West Local Government of Osun State, Nigeria. He's a multi-talented artist and writer consistently working towards success, planning, and operational improvements. He has a build-up experience in artistic development and creative procedures positively impacting overall creativity and productivity. I observes art as an intermediary between man and his aesthetic feelings, i perceives aesthetics as the way nature treats man, at least, My perception of it. My works are about political issues, faith, humanity, social ills and matters that I'm passionate about. My Art is about man's society. The man's society is not developing, because it works on an alien system. Besides making art for aesthetics or the love of art, i also believe in making works about the struggles for people's existence, socio-politically and artistically, i.e i endeavour to portray the whole idea of the people's environment in my Art. Hence, Art to me is all about the representation of what is happening in the life of a people at a particular period of time. As far as Africa is concerned, with this yardstick, art can not just be only for aesthetics, art must be for the imminent, needed and inevitable Revolution. I have chosen mixed media as my means of expression because of the freedom and reach it affords me, the freedom to touch on various media with diverse textures of messages.
