Art Description

Painting: Oil, Gesso on Canvas.

Research into ancient Irish Cairns and the abstract images that decorate them have become a starting point to create images that while both primitive and sophisticated capture light as an experience.
These 5000 year old geometric structures are basically astrological clocks that capture sunlight in carefully aligned chambers for the purpose of reading time. They embrace both the light and the darkness and are decorated with abstract rock engravings that are narrow in their focus but are capable of referring to many things.
My interest in capturing light in my work led me to researching these structures looking for meaning and understanding in a time long ago. I find investigating this area gives me a clarity of thought that allow me to create work that while complex in its simplicity is also broad in its extension.
Using simultaneous contrast in my palette I want brightness to be felt as an experience with the intensity coming from the physical energy of light that we absorb. They are only becoming real by the action of the viewers gaze.
I want these images to create light out of darkness right at the centre of the viewer’s consciousness fulfilling no end except to exist.
