They were inherited through the female line and protected, because it was a family heirloom. If the boy was going on a long journey, the girl would give him her handkerchief, a sign that she would be waiting for him. A lot of folk rites and rituals are also connected with the handkerchief. For example, if the family had a sick baby, it was wrapped in the mother's handkerchief. According to tradition, it should protect the baby from diseases and evil thoughts and bad eyes. The plot of the painting is extended to the side pats and it allows us to hand the painting on the wall without a frame
