ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is an original acrylic painting on a wooden panel, framed in an unglazed box style frame finished in white. The inspiration for this painting is a grassy meadow with a worn path leading uphill to a group of trees just over the brow of the hill. It is set near the end of a bright cloudless summers day in an atmosphere of calm and peace where there is hardly any breeze. I was interested in the textures of the different grasses and their seeds and in capturing a sense of anticipation in how the scene would unfold if the viewer were to go along the path to top of the slope. The painting is 34 x 34 cm (13.5" x 13.5") and the outer frame is 53 x 53 cm (21" x 21".) It is protected with a specialist varnish, signed on the front and is strung at the back ready to hang.

Nigel Wood is a painter and printmaker best known for the lyrical imagery in his landscapes inspired by the wild and open spaces surrounding Cardigan Bay where he lives. He is also recognised as a portrait painter working oil, acrylic, pastel and charcoal. He trained in illustration and painting at Carmarthenshire College of Art in West Wales from 1980 - 84. Solo, touring and group exhibitions from 1984 to the present include: The National Portrait Gallery, The Royal College of Art Gallery, The Mall Galleries, Aberdeen Art Gallery, Galerie beim Roten Turm, Germany, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, The Orange Moon gallery, Vienna and art fairs in London, Amsterdam, Sydney and and New York. "I strive to create meditative interpretations of the surreal beauty I find in nature. Each piece is built up gradually over time with a series of opaque layers and transparent glazes on either a gesso panel or a stretched canvas. There is a quiet intensity to the whole process and my hope is that I can create for the viewer a sense of inspired calm and peace in each piece." Media features include: BBC regional TV, Evening Standard, Art Review magazine, Sunday Express, Sunday Times and inclusion in the books 'Intimate Portraits' published by Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and '500 Portraits' published by The National Portrait Gallery. "Startling sincerity and freshness... I sense the presence of a serious painter" Brian Sewell. Evening Standard.
