ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Green Thumb is a small elderly woman wearing a pair of purple garden gloves. She is considered a magician when it comes to anything green and growing, and will turn any half-dry shrub into a towering mass of foliage (her methods remain unknown). Her strong little hands aren’t scared of getting stuck in the dirt – always digging, pruning, planting and watering her tiny piece of paradise. Her garden is bursting at the seams and is a thing of pride, lovingly cultivated and kept by her. Every bloom seems brighter, every stem stretches higher, every leaf spans wider – a compact oasis in the middle of the concrete jungle. She’ll turn a dull piece of earth into a grand green masterpiece, a natural refuge for humans, birds and reptiles alike. Groen Vingers knows her way around any garden, and her legacy will be carried on through all the gardens that she has brought to life, one seedling at a time.

My name is Marié Morrison, I'm a self-taught artist from Pretoria, South Africa. By day I am a graphic designer and own a small graphic design studio with my husband. But by heart I am an artist - always. I paint and do block printing in my spare time. I fell in love with art at a very young age, and it's always been a big part of my life. Being a graphic designer, I am naturally inclined to take any subject matter and break it down into a more stylized/simplified/abstract state. This strongly influences and rolls over to my art style. I consider my pieces as mind maps - snippets and fragments of memories, experiences and emotions. Captured in colour, pattern and rhythm. My paintings and block prints are hugely inspired by Africa – its richness, soul, vibe and warmth. The African wild has a deep rhythm that never lets go of your soul once you've experienced it - I hope to capture some of that (or even just a glimpse of it) in my work.
