About The Artwork
Everyone needs a Guardian Angel. Egg tempera is a tedious process, applying the medium to create texture in Black and White was a great departure from my earlier work in Classic Byzantine iconography. This small collection of 18 images was provoked by the solitude found within women. Tombstone images inspired the collection, images collected while traveling and poking around many Grave yards.

Mary Jane Miller has been a full-time artist dedicated to iconography for over 30 years in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She paints and teaches the ancient Byzantine-style art of Icon writing as a prayer form. Her understanding of its spiritual symbolic language and her dedicated skill result in an experience that is deeply meditative as well as artistic. She teaches using the traditional medium of egg tempera, hand-tooled pewter, and gold leaf. Her magnificent and unique studio in Mexico is open by appointment.
