ABOUT THE ARTWORK

‘Perhaps Hermes would be more integrated in a big city by carrying his messages on an electric scooter.’ My journey into working with Slate Stone began with a deep appreciation for the natural world and its raw beauty. The texture of the stone speaks to me—its rugged, organic surface carries an echo of ancient times. It feels like holding a piece of the earth’s history, a reminder of the simplicity and strength of nature. Through my art, I aim to bring viewers back to those primal origins, much like returning to the cave, to the place where art began. There’s something powerful about using materials that come directly from the earth; it’s grounding and humbling. For me, creating on Slate Stone is a way of reconnecting with nature, of honoring the raw, untouched beauty of the world around us. I want my viewers to feel this connection too. When they see my work, I hope they sense the weight of time, the echo of ancient landscapes, and the peace that comes from being in tune with nature. My art is about more than just aesthetics—it’s a bridge to something deeper, a return to the essence of who we are and where we come from.

I was born in a small town in the Carpathian Mountains, called Huszt, which today belongs to Ukraine, and which had previously been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. At the time of my birth and until I was 15 years old, it was part of the former Soviet Union. It was in that cultural environment that I began to experiment with art, in this case with rather abstract representations, perhaps influenced by my uncle Boris, a well-known artist from Transcarpátia. There I also studied history of art for a year. In the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and taking advantage of the fact that I have Hungarian roots on my mother's side, I moved to live in Budapest, where I was able to share space in a residence for students from all over the world. It is there that this new mixture of cultures generates in me a new artistic restlessness that I combine with my studies of Russian and Portuguese literature. After finishing my studies and after years of working in different occupations, I decided to travel to Spain to do the Camino de Santiago in 2010. That experience undoubtedly meant a change of perspective in my creative perspective, being the motifs from that moment on, incorporating surrealist elements as a tribute to the lands traveled and the situations lived during the Camino. In 2011 he held the first official exhibition in a gallery in the center of Budapest, where part of the canvases inspired by the Camino de Santiago are exhibited. In the following two years I was able to participate in exhibitions in other smaller towns in Hungary. In 2013 I moved to Barcelona and I felt a strong connection with surrealism, which I continue to capture on canvas. It was also there that the idea of experimenting for the first time with stone, in this case with slate, was born. In 2015 he participated in the exhibition of the open days of art in the neighborhood of Poblenou in Barcelona. A series of Eyes – Mandalas, painted in oil on slate stone, is on display. With the birth of my son, I enter a more introspective phase and, despite continuing to create, for a long period I do not participate in exhibitions again, but share my creations more intimately with the people close to me. In 2023, after a trip to the mountains of León, I come back into contact with the land of origin of the slate and reconnect with it. It is by sharing these new creations that people close to me related to the art world encourage me to participate again in some exhibitions.
