ABOUT THE ARTWORK
My recent portraits are made from cut plywood, and are in an exploratory place between paiting and sculpture. I was experimenting with painting intuitively, using only imagination, and I’d been looking at 1950s cartoons. The playful brushstrokes danced freely from my brush, and I was surprised and amused to have made such a happy work. It is somewhere between a cartoon and a portrait. This lifesize head is free-standing, and comes with a white shekf that attaches to the wall with aptwo fixings, or can sit on a shekf or table. It is supported at the back by a small fin-shaped stand.

I make figurative paintings and sculptures inspired by historical styles such as Victorian Gothic, Chinoiserie and 19th century India, constructing life-size painted cutouts from wood. My work is inspired by Indian miniature painting, Pop art, Commedia dell'Arte and folklore art. The cutouts are arranged in various contexts - as paintings on walls, in clusters, like stage sets. I was short-listed for the Contemporary British Painting Prize last year, and am currently working with Arts Council funding, the 'Develop Your Creative Practise' with mentors Sacha Craddock and Manick Govinda.
