The simple use of symbolism in my own work often leaves the meaning open to interpretation. Many symbols such as the cross and the golly doll are so emotive that putting them together was an obvious choice for an artist like me, who likes to ask questions and leave them open to debate. I've never understood racism, why any one man would think them self superior to another because of the colour of his skin, believing that people’s qualities are influenced by their race resulting in unfair treatment of members of other races. It strikes me that racism is, or has been in the past, indoctrinated like religious beliefs and over time those beliefs have come under question and rightly so. With my own work being about play in every sense of the word, mind games to tease the eye and engage the senses, I try to create work with an adult content but in the manner of an innocent child asking a simple question. It is not my intention to offend anyone but just to make them think. I have used found objects in my work for many years such as toys, gold and silver jewellery as symbols to connect with my audience in communicating a variety of messages; it also questions values in a number of ways. The painting "He Who Would be King" was originally conceived with Barac Obama becoming President in the USA . Amidst an atmosphere of great hope and yet uncertainty, the beginning of a new age with old values brought under question and the fact that the underdog had been put in the firing line at last to prove himself worthy. It is never my intention to justify anything that I do, but a lot of time and thought goes into how the work reads. The viewer finds their own questions and answers, I just put them in the situation.

Jamie Andrews was born on the edge of Dartmoor, Devon. His inspiration to become an artist stems from his father, a dealer of art and antiques in the 1960s. Who encouraged him to playfully draw and look imaginatively at life, opening a world of visual communication and imagination. Moving from his beloved Dartmoor to the small Cornish town of Looe in 1976 at 14 years old was not a happy one, with a sudden realisation of growing up. Punk rock music and the attitude of no future dominated his mid-teens, creating a long-lasting rebellious streak. He defies limits and expectations, enjoying poking fun at more traditional methods of creating art. Working with a childlike playfulness and naivety with the introduction of toys and charms, often vintage, highly collectable pieces which the artist works into his acrylic paintings and sculptures as a means of playing with the idea of and subverting value. J’s vivid, tactile works bind a jovial, playfulness and innocence with much deeper messages, often darkly humorous accounts of politics, religion and the troubling events of contemporary society. Throughout the matter-of-fact and satirical documentation of worldly matters, J maintains a deeply rooted sense of compassion for his fellow man and the environment. His work is bound up in the essence of lost innocence, cleverly captured with a delicate balance between a bold display of raw tragedy with a nostalgic easiness and empathy.
