About The Artwork

This is an abstract landscape in the tradition of Japanese Sumi-e, using a black/grey limited palette with a highlight in red. The inspiration is from these words: Yet rising from the tomb, from the black oblivion stretching out my hand, my hand flung like a drowned man's hand on a rock, I touched her flank and knew I was carried by the current in death over to the new world, and was climbing out on the shore, risen, not to the old world, the old, changeless I, the old life, wakened not to the old knowledge but to a new earth, a new I, a new knowledge, a new world of time. D.H. Lawrence, New Heaven and Earth, 1917. The paper is 450 gsm paper from St Cuthbert's mill in the UK.

I aspire to capture that primal instant when art resonates with our senses, evoking both emotional and intellectual reactions. When art achieves this, it transcends mere acquisition and assumes a profound significance in our lives. It is in this essence of being indispensable that the true value of art manifests. Each painting, in this light, always tells the truth. In Toronto I ran an art brokerage business which enabled me to work with interior designers and others on the placement of art in the workplace as well as in the home. When I worked as a consultant at ATKearney in London, we often invited clients to our offices in Berkeley Square to view possible corporate art for acquisition. I enjoyed working with the curators for these shows and introducing our clients to the art and meeting the artists. I am keen to engage with those who have an interest of art in the workplace or designers looking for art. As a painter of abstracts I have an historical interest in abstract expressionism, futurism, Japanese abstraction and interesting modern and contemporary painters charting new directions. I hope I am one of them. I write about art and have published, including a regular feature in Art of England magazine, now ceased publication. I have produced a guide to painting abstract art. I also lead workshops for adults on free expression using Japanese brush techniques (sumi-e) and liquid watercolours. My paintings have homes in the US, Canada, Belgium, United Kingdom, Malta, and France. I am a Canadian having lived in the UK, Belgium, Malta and now in France.
