Even I don’t have a religion, the figure of the god in a colorful religious painting was able to find a serene strength and an unexpected humanity. They comforted me and made me feel anxious at the same time. Everyday worries make you strong. Anxieties about study, health, and the future make you study, exercise, and prepare for the future. However, excessive worries beyond the ordinary category make you helpless. My timid personality and depression have created various worries over time. And the enormous anxiety created the fear of death, the ultimate future. All efforts to prepare for random deaths which decided without any rules were meaningless. I was sensitive to the possibility of minor deaths in my daily life, and it was hard to carry on with my daily routine. I needed to calm the anxiety that I could not know the correct answer or the result. 'Helpless' is a work to reveal my anxiety and fear of death, and at the same time vaguely materialization absolute, divine object which prevent death or to decide death. The irregularly arranged planar elements reveal the unconscious fear directly rather than constitute a reasonable narrative.

South Korea
Dabin Lee is an artist based in Seoul. Her main themes are emotions that people commonly experience but are not easily revealed, such as depression, fear and anxiety. As a child, Dabin explored the inner dark parts of her depression and used art as a means of expressing and resolving emotions. Mostly her works are inspired by portrait photography, medieval religious paintings, literature, and expressed using rough and thick textures, spilling and spreading accidental effects. And her paintings are expanding the range of expression to media such as body painting, photographs, videos and performances. The beginning of Dabin’s work was to relieve personal feelings. But as her work expanded, she realized that it was contraindicated to reveal dark emotions in Korean society. Since then, her goal has been to let viewers see their dark feelings in her works and to face them.
