I have made a series of paintings based on the herbarium. I made a painterly translation of this, not literally pages from a herbarium, but references to it. In addition to the entire plant, you often also see parts of it, sometimes a numbering, spots on pages, round openings through which a binding system has passed, (rests of) tape etc. Embroidered parts can also be seen in this series. This painting shows twigs of plants against a layered background in which plant parts can be seen. The canvas has orange nylon flocked circles to it. The white spots, whether or not connected, can refer to sites. All my paintings are made on professional linen and fitted with high-quality wooden and aluminum stretcher frames. The painting comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.

You can read a great recent article about my work now at Aedra Fine Arts! (Archive October 2024) The ambiguity of our perception motivates me to create layered paintings and drawings, using both paint and image building techniques. This allows me to explore the formal qualities of a painting, as well as the relationship between different layers of the image. The shapes in my work arise intuitively from the behaviour of the paint itself or are strictly directed to appear realistic. I am intrigued by the relationship they create, as well as the relationship between the two-dimensional plane and the illusion of space. Often, one of the image layers consists of another material, such as an embroidered or flocked velvet-like layer. Through these additions, I create a layer that distinguishes itself from the others, adding a sense of enrichment or intensity to my canvases. My inspiration often comes from natural shapes. These forms, unburdened by meaning, give me the freedom to create images that I can imbue with their own painted meaning. The final painting is a departure from reality, touching on perception, feelings, and suggestion, without trying to tell a specific story.
