Hiking with the Umbrella Painting

"Hiking with the Umbrella" is set with Lion Rock as the background. The Lion Rock has a special place in the hearts of Hong Kong people, and often it is used to represent the fighting spirit of the Hong Kong people. "Beneath the Lion Rock" is a Cantonese classic sung by Roman Tam in the 1970s which depicts this spirit that bonds the people of Hong Kong. During the SARS outbreak, the song frequently played on media. In recent times due to social discontent with the government, the government commissioned a song sung by two popular artistes, Jacky Cheung and Eason Chan "同舟之情" to boost community cohesion and support for the government. In this work, I try to capture the heart and soul of the Umbrella movement with this symbolic hill as the focal point. During the move, supporters brought yellow umbrellas to the peak and even hanging banners off the sides of the mountain. The sea of red flowers at the foot of the bottom is like the burning passion of the people and the Hong Kong spirit, and each thread sewn representing the people who form the fabric of Hong Kong. The threads also form a concave structure which leaves the viewer feeling that they are standing with the people and looking up Lion rock.
