About The Artwork

Oil on board study of Hoppers lighthouse. Edward Hopper influenced my development heavily a few years ago. I was fascinated by his ability to create atmosphere and a sense of intrigue in the scenes that were portrayed, especially his lighthouse series. I have always been interested in this period of American history and it is well known that Hopper reflected this period in his work- and went onto influence film and theatre. Modern America is made from Hoppers vision. My painting here is a contemporary interpretation of one of his paintings using my own style.

Tom Voyce (b. 1989) is an established UK painter with international exposure. His subject matter comprises of a variety of different themes such as airports, railway stations, roads and bridges and other places of transit. Voyce’s compositions consistently demonstrate an interest in the formal elements of composition: structure, perspective, shape and light. His paintings are accounts of fleeting moments within a landscape; the fall of light on a building, or the shadows cast by a motorway flyover. The strength in these pieces lies not in their faithful depiction of a landscape, but in their suggestion of a sense of place, of being present within a particular space at a particular moment. Artists such as Edward Hopper and Richard Diebenkorn have been immensely influential in his development, as have more contemporary artists- American painter Ben Aronson amongst others. Hopper's proverb, "if you can say it in words, then there's no reason to paint it", forms a principal part of my attitude towards the uniquely communicative purpose of art. His latest body of work entitled 'In Transit' is influenced by travel and place, exploring the landscapes and cityscapes of Canada, the United States, Fiji and New Zealand. www.tom-voyce.com tomrlvoyce@gmail.com
