In January this year, I spent a blissful day on Brighton beach in Sussex, UK. I sat in 3 different places and bashed down some quick #mixedmedia sketches, ending up with 23 drawings. Since then I have been layering them and abstracting them and I now have 12 finished pieces. They're only small (approx 17cms sq) so I thought they would benefit from framing. I rejected the initial white frames I had and have bought new black ones which I think really help the colours sing. They may or may not give you a sense of this part of the coast. But I do hope they work in their own right as little jewel like paintings of joy.

They have been particularly influenced by Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Eardley and Barbara Rae.

The piece is window mounted with black card and framed in a black wooden box frame. Overall size of framed piece is 9.5 inches x 9.5 inches.

I like to say that I paint ‘The Edge of The Rainbow’. The term comes from Donna Tartt’s novel, The Goldfinch as she describes a space that sits just beyond reality, where all beauty, magic and art exists. My paintings are an attempt to conjure this space, to break through this reality and try and grasp what lies just beyond what we can see. Its a place that is blurry, shimmering and impossible to capture. In practice, I use layers and layers of thin, runny oil paint to create glowing glazes of colour that vibrate and change in the light. As I apply each translucent layer I like to imagine that light and air is caught within the painting, allowing it to breathe and come alive.
