ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The pattern of this piece is similar to the pattern in painting "2020"—stacked-twisted figures. The pattern is inspired by Buddhism's "Saha world" and Christianity's concept of hell, representing suffering and endurance. But here, different from "2020", these patterns are framed in a triangle, a geometrical form that often links with mysterious, philosophical, and spiritual reading. Unlike the painting "2020", this piece, beyond addressing my feelings of being oppressed by the depressive reality of individual suffering versus collective glory, I am searching for a place to disburden the weight of culture and history. This place is dark, at both the center and the back of this piece; it could be infinite, empty, nihilistic, or unexplainable, but it must be light and free enough to balance out the heaviness of culture and history.

I am a Chinese artist who currently works in Chicago, US. I received my BFA in 2013 from Boston University and my MFA in painting and drawing in 2021 from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. My paintings blur the categories of figuration and abstraction. Within them, I utilize themes of pattern, space, and light in relation to the human body to discuss and critique the constructions of systems of belief. Being an artist with a multi-cultural background, I have insight into the many ways people have used and abused culture and history to create barriers and divisions within the broader spectrum of humanity. Within my paintings, I address the feelings of being oppressed by those barriers and divisions while looking for places that could transcend both culture and history. I have shown at the Sloan House in Boston, Guayaba Gallery in Union City, Visionary Project in New York, Research House of Asian Art and FLXST Contemporary Art Gallery in Chicago, etc.
