About The Artwork

This work was inspired by the cows in my friend's pasture. It seems that they are very curious about visitors. When I arrived they seemed to bunch together to evaluate my coming and, in the end, they appeared to be plotting some action - hence the title of this work. I wanted to show not only the herd of cows, but a bit about their perceived personalities. We always seem to take animals - especially domesticated farm animals - for granted, assuming they are simple creatures interested only in eating and walking around. Somehow I think they are much more complex than we realize. In this painting, I wanted to express that complexity with the cows and in their environment. They are clearly standing in a pasture, but the colors bounce off of them and create a sense of movement and solidarity. The painting is done in acrylic on treated birchwood panel 1.5 " thick. The sides of the panel are stained a lovely walnut brown. The painting is professionally framed in a simple black satin wooden floater which allows the viewer to see the stained edges of the painting.

I was once traveling with a close friend, photographing everything in sight, as any tourist does. I asked him, "Don't you want to take any photos?" He answered, "I like to remember things in my own way." What a profound statement - and one that I take seriously when I paint. My art is about remembering things . . . in my own way . . . and "disremembering" everything else. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, my artistic career began at an early age when I began painting with my mother on Sunday afternoons. Surrounded by art books, paintings and sculpture at home, I always knew I wanted to be a painter.
