ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is a small oil painting on a chunky-edged canvas, (unframed) completed in late 2015. It is one of a series of paintings of minimal landscapes combined with hand-painted text. This painting is of an Irish beach, caught on a misty morning. The light sea mist with the sun shining through it, created create pearlescent, pale hues stretching out into infinity. There is barely visible text written across the sky: "I don't see anything," he said. I'm based in Ireland, so the majority of these paintings feature Irish scenes, however, the series also includes some imagery from further afield. The text in these paintings, rather than being merely descriptive, motivational, or informative is intentionally vague, and is there to create atmosphere or intrigue, to prod viewers into forming their own imaginings as to a greater story around the image. Viewers have described these paintings as 'poem paintings' and the text similar to 'haikus'.

I was born in London and was raised and lived in Ireland until moving to Berlin, Germany in 2007. After 6 years in Berlin, I returned to Ireland in 2013. I completed a joint degree in Fine Art Painting and Art History at the National College of Art and Design in Thomas Street, Dublin and graduated with honours in 1995. My work has been exhibited in Ireland the UK and Germany among others and features in private collections in Germany and Ireland. The broad theme for my work is 'Fairytales for adults' - I like to depict the unseen thoughts, stories, imaginings, dreams and emotions that go on inside our heads - mine in specific. For the last few years I had been drawing and later sculpting small figures which bordered between lifelike and doll-like as subjects for my art - both painting and sculpture. However, since returning to Ireland from Berlin I have graduated onto using real people and environments as painting subjects rather than a self-constructed world.
