INK WATER GOLD: Paper Painting

These began as ink and watercolor journal entries while spending a very healing time in St. John, USVI and Long Island, Bahamas. I could not stop making them when I got home and they’ve developed to become more textured and layered. Included to the process now are gold/copper leaf, rice paper, resin on hardboard. Some are made individually, others in small groups and the larger pieces are mounted to an unstretched canvas. After two years of delving deep in political expression with my work, I welcomed the playfulness of these patinated pieces. The artwork consists of a grid of twenty rectangular panels arranged in a 5x7 configuration. Each panel within the grid has a greenish hue with varying textures and shades, and is bordered by a rough, earthy-colored frame. The overall effect is one of muted, organic tones, creating a sense of repetition and pattern. The rustic, almost unfinished look of the borders contrasts with the smoother, more subdued green interiors of the panels, providing a dynamic visual interplay between structure and texture.
