About The Artwork

The work is inspired by the artist’s German poem Ikone whose German and English text is found at http://www.ottolaske.com/documents/German-Complete.pdf. It visually encases a black-and-white version of Nazi-Symbology in a field of color, -- indicating ways of art making that overcome atrocities without forgiving them. Rendering thoughts of survivor-guilt in the poem is barely attempted in the work: to do so would entail depicting the feelings of a grown-up German who is in the process of becoming the intimate of a Jewish household. Both poem and artwork are no more than fragile icons standing in for atonement and the remembrance of huge injustices. Only the small human figure at the middle left hints at the holocaust tragedy. The work is printed on Hot Press Fine Art Smooth Bright White paper (an acid free, 100% cotton rag media with a bright textured finish, yielding an extremely high color gamut and black density). It is signed and numbered by the artist, accompanied by a CoA, and shipped without hanging hardware, in a very sturdy tube protected against folding and puncture.

I am an experimental artist working in digital painting, graphics, abstract photography, animation, and textile design. My work is abstract in the sense that I invent shapes, colors, and textures without reference to representational concerns. Working entirely digitally, I consider the boundaries between domains of visual art as entirely permeable. Since I work with a large variety of tools aided by a mastery of controlled random, the outcome of my composition and design processes are unpredictable; their results often straddle the line between established visual-art categories. The majority of my visual work is found on SaatchiArt where my musical compositions and German and English poetry are found at www.ottolaske.com. Outside of my artistic work, I am the founder and director of the Interdevelopmental Institute (IDM), a graduate-level teaching institute for those interested in adult-developmental thinking and research.
