"If Not NOW, When?" is a statement about growing up in a patriarchal society, how men try to subvert women when they speak up for equal rights.
I am inspired by Michelle Obama's autobiography, climbing the ladder of success as an African American woman. Women and girls of all races have been fighting for equal opportunities in the world for centuries, somehow we seem to be going backwards. (the cutout fabric border is filled with portraits of women and girls-some known, some not.)
Notes on what the mixed media painting is made up from:
*The 2 pages are from Robert Johnson's book "She", from the series "He", "She", "We" about how the we relate to eachother - highly recommended reading. The vintage (1925) cutout girl and man are from child's cut paper doll page - I have owned for since I was a teenager.
Dictionary page from a 1909 Webster International Dictionary.
