About The Artwork

"The Pain is my Shepered", title ispired by the religious credo "The Lord is my Shepered", is somehow a symbol of what inspires me in my works: drama, unquietness, feeling of imperfection, feeling of incompleteness, all expressed by the almost-crying man. The dark background, made with bitumen, underlines this dramatic mood, and deals well with the rusts (made with water and salt) and the chiaroscuro in the skin. This figure seems coming from a very old past, as mythology plays a good part in what inspires me. The painting is made on hand-welded 0,5 mm steel plates, and is supported on the back by an 4 cm aluminum structure that's not visible unless on the side, giving the feeling that the painting it's suspending from the wall. All the parts you perceive as red/brownish are rusted. The oxidation process is started in a natural way, with water, salt and other materials. The fascination of this process is that, although the painting is covered by layers of varnishes and wax to protect it from the humidity and air, the rust can not be completely stopped, so that with the time it will change and develop in a surprising way.

Sabatino Cersosimo was born in Turin in 1974. He studied advertising design and then received a Degree in Painting and Decoration at the Academy of Fine Arts of Turin in 1999. Since 2011 he lives and works in Berlin. Following a line that has its roots in a certain expressionist painting (especially the Viennese Secession) but evolves through the modern mediterranean and english realism, he uses basically two surfaces: metal and wood. Since he mainly paints with oil and oxidation on steel plates, the concepts of time, will and chance have been crucial to the development of his research. Art is historically considered eternal, but Cersosimo's paintings underscore art’s metamorphic nature. Here, we witness artwork as it is developing, shifting, and in some cases, mutating into other forms, much like the elements of nature on the planet. Cersosimo's paintings mirror constellations of humanity in tiny particles. In doing so, they feature many of the commonalities shared among human beings across culture, language, gender, and race.
