About The Artwork

This work uses a common internet search result to represent the barriers that corporations and/or governments use to control people. A world in which, ostensibly, there is a freedom of expression and information, the metaphorical experience of a brick wall, beyond which you and I may not proceed comes as a rude shock. The colour palette here is limited to three main colours. Texture has been achieved through the use of cold wax medium and marble dust, the overall effect being that if a brick wall. This work was a finalist in the Hornsby Art Prize, 2022.

I am ethnically a Pakistani artist, living and working in Sydney. I am self-taught and enjoy painting landscapes and still life in oils. I allow my art practice to evolve in different directions as I discover new materials and ideas. In the past couple of years, I have been enjoying my discovery of beeswax as a painting medium and a lot of my recent work incorporates the heavy texture and subtle shifts of colour that working with wax allows. I am inspired by how light transforms objects and people. Light and shadow are two important characters that populate my work. My paintings develop slowly, in layers of varying thickness and opacity. Each stage of work is instinctive, leading to, and determining, the next. In a meditative conversation between my work and myself, the end often arrives as a revelation. I have travelled and lived for many years in Europe, the Middle East and Pakistan, so the influences in my work are varied and diverse.
