About The Artwork

Nature, the gigantic impact the Eruption in Eyjafjallajökull had this spring is the reason for this painting. It is made out of patine au vin, blend of milk, eggs sugar and pigment and Wine from the area I live in now, close to the Mosel river. Specially added to this painting is ash from the Volcano Eyjafjallajökull which erupted in April 2010 in Iceland, where I was born. I went to Iceland twice in April this year and both times there was an eruption but different Volcanos, and the later trip I was stuck in Copenhagen for 5 days, like so many other tourists. I went again in the summer and gathered a lot of ash which I am now using in my paintings.

R. Benedikta / Gudrun Benedikta Eliasdottir graduated in 1987 with a B.Ed in Arts. Since then she has lived and worked on her art in three countries; Iceland, France and Luxembourg. She paints with a tempera, "patine au vin", that includes amongst other ingredients white wine and eggs. She has developed the mixture over the years and experimented with using various minerals like volcanic ash and crushed stones. She throws, smears and drizzles the colours on the canvas and uses all kinds of objects to put them on, the paintbrush is hardly ever used. The main theme in her work is nature, working with natural ingredients so the natural pigments get a new purpose. In a way we can say that this is recycling. She has participated in exhibitions in museums, galleries and salons in Iceland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Norway, Germany, France, England, Austria and the U.S. For further information and photos: www.rbenedikta.com Today also Art teacher in Menntaskolinn vid Sund, College in Reykjavik.
