The work depicts 4 figures on the promenade overlooking a Bay. A mother or grandmother leans on the railings and looks out over the Bay, and is accompanied by a little girl who faces toward the viewer and observes a woman in sports attire, likely a runner. A male (runner) supports himself on the railings while stretching. There is a narrative to the image, which is left to the viewer to construct. The canvas is completed in oils, but allows the process and the pencil and pen developments to be very clear. The canvas is completed in oils, but allows the process and the pencil and pen developments to be very clear. The work is reminiscent of illustration, cartoon and caricature and is developed from imagination and memory of its content. The theme, 'In praise of Folly' is taken from the seminal work of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, who's book/essay of the same title was first published in 1511 and dedicated to Sir Thomas More, famously beheaded by Henry VIII. The work includes a motif which is repeated through 6 related works of the same dimensions, which were first exhibited as a polyptych with a small bronze representing the same motif. This work, 'In praise of Folly No.1' is the first of the six canvases.

United Kingdom
The work presented is mostly figurative, from imagination, for the freedom that provides. The process is often made evident by using oil or other washes for colour. The work illustrates ill-defined narrative circumstances to intimate the perplexities and absurdities of life, presented as a way to engage and provoke thought. The work is intended to perhaps mildly amuse, intrigue or just delay the viewer. It pays homage to satire, caricature and cartoon. I vaguely appropriate on occasions, as a shorthand visual language which helps me to interrogate the state of our world and our place in it. I intend to punctuate ideas, as do photojournalists or street artists, but leave ample space for interpretation.
