ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In the Pink is a lyrical series of abstract, non-representational paintings that emerged in 2014 after a lot of exploration. I wanted to create art that was looser and freer, less controlled than my earlier work; and I felt the desire to use brushes and paint again. I chose gouache, opaque watercolor. In the Pink started as small works on paper. I began with gouache and finished with sections in pastels. Then I worked larger with gouache and added marks with oilsticks, pastels, and crushed pastels. And yes, "In the Pink" refers to that feeling of happiness and to the main color the eye is drawn to in these paintings. Contemporary symbolism of the color pink indicates the empowered feminine and women's conscious activism for equal rights and ethical government. I'm not afraid of the color pink or of making beautiful, joyful work.
