Oil, acrylic and mixed media collage on exposed linen canvas (primed first with clear gesso for archival protection). This piece is part of my "Fauna & Flora" Series. In this series, I employ a hybrid form of painting, drawing and collage as a metaphor for the continual cycle of decay and regeneration in nature. Inspired by forest habitats surrounding the city where I live, I carefully build each work's history as layers of paint, hand-drawn and printed vintage ephemera, toile, Victorian weaving patterns, elements of Chinoiserie, barnacles, lichens, webs and other natural forms develop into an eclectic composition. Fauna and flora are protagonists interacting with what humans leave behind in the environment– ranging from a Louis XV chair to a muscle car or vintage radio. Paper scraps and fragments of what we leave behind as a civilization address the transience of our era. Old and new come together celebrating nature, memory and the cycle of life. Signed on back. This painting ships wired and ready to hang unframed.

In my painting practice, I assemble vintage sources such as photography, wallpaper clippings, film posters and other ephemera, layering them in tactile, modernist collages. These collages then serve as sketches that I translate into oil paintings on canvas that appear to be collages, but are not. My faux-collage painting technique creates abstracted landscapes suggesting torn documents, crumbling architectural elements or layers of sedimentary rock from various human eras. My work highlights how the rise and fall of viewpoints over many decades relates to our place in the environment. BIO Lauren Matsumoto is a painter known for her use of a hybrid form of painting and collage that creates an innovative dialogue between the two mediums. Her work employs a light, sophisticated color palette informed by her Scandinavian and Northern European roots. Matsumoto has an international collector base, with works held in collections across Europe, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and North America. Her work was recently presented in a solo show in New York City and previously in Hong Kong, as well as in notable group shows in New York City, Vancouver, Tokyo, and at the United States Embassy in Oman. Among recent honors, she was awarded by the New York Foundation of the Arts as a 2021 City Artist Corps Grantee, and was artist in residence at Sugarlift / The High Line Nine. In 2019, she was an artist in residence at the prestigious MASS MoCA museum studio program in North Adams, MA. Her unique perspective on Ornithology was inspired by growing up around birds owned by her grandfather, a professional bird breeder. She lives and works in New York.
