ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inch by Inch is inspired from rowing through the city of Bristol in winter at dusk. The warm glow of street and office lights illuminating the atmosphere bringing a feeling of warmth and safety juxtaposed with the damp, derelict industrial buildings, wasteland, dark tunnels and floating rubbish. Stripping back my colours to neutral tones have allowed me to harness my emotional response and channel deeper for inner meaning to my work. The concept for Inch by Inch grew out of a view from the water which captured both the line of curved steel bridge as the light caught its edge, and a crane that appeared to hang in the mist above us both, creating both a sense of industrial strength and growth. Approach: Use of mixed media to build texture and structure to the scene, in combination with the multiple layers of paint are aimed to deliver additional depth and atmosphere to the work. For me, a key area is the block of black, bottom left, blended with a dry brush and works to seat the overall image. The canvas has been professionally framed (Floating frame colour charcoal)

I classify myself as an emerging artist having entered the world of art a little way down my career path!! I have left the corporate world behind and am now pursuing a serious career in the world of art. Having grown up in the wilds of North Norfolk, I was surrounded by seasonally changing landscapes, expansive coastlines, immense sandy beaches, large skies and infinite horizons. These have embedded in me a deep-seated need for a sense of space and infinity in my life and in my work. I paint mainly in acrylic on canvas, abstract landscapes and very much enjoy playing with colour but I decided I would challenge myself and develop a series of paintings with a very limited colour palate to try to capture mood and atmosphere. I did however sneak a little bit of colour !! My paintings are held in collections in Australia, Europe and the UK. I work from a studio in Bristol, UK.
