About The Artwork

Charles IV never missed any opportunity to take part in a duel or a tournament. Sometimes he fought under a different name and coat of arms. In one such occasion, he suffered a strong blunt strike with a lance to the left side of his neck, he fell off his horse in full armor, broke his jaw, injured his spine and broke several other bones. . In this painting, I was hoping to capture not only the reality of the close aftermath of such event, but also express the hopelessness and fragility he must have felt during his months of recovery. . Painting 'Injured after tournament' is part of HOMAGE CAROLI QUARTI collection. Tailored & exhibited together with Igor Kitzberger’s sculptures to pay tribute to Charles IV. The Margrave of Moravia, King of Bohemia, King of Lombardy, Burgundy and Arles, Holy Roman Emperor, but mainly a leader, philosopher and visionary who has made Czech Lands the centre of medieval Europe. The exhibition was closing his 700 year anniversary in 2016.

ARTIST STATEMENT . The core of my practice embodies drawing, painting and calligraphy. Through deep knowledge of classical art techniques, with a constant research in modernity and innovation, my work aims at portraying truth and beauty. After living in numerous European capitals, such were Prague, London, Athens and Paris, my artistic roots grew deep in European soil. Nevertheless my art draws inspiration and incorporates elements from diversity of backgrounds, from Byzantine mosaics to art of Central European expressionism (Egon Schiele) or Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. I have recently started exploring the process of painting with 24 karat gold. Chosen for its intrinsic ability to reflect light and change colour tones, gold in every of its forms has instantly become the fundamental element of my work. With its metamorphoses it proves to convey a message in the most bold and direct manner. Be it a street in Paris or a fine art nude, drawing is what I consider the probity of art and the foundation of all other arts. I pursue drawing as a method of investigation into human nature and inner integrity. After a decade of studying figural drawing and portraiture, human body has become the greatest inspiration of my work. I am intrigued by its ability to project one ́s character, its reflection of reality and express a stream of thoughts of both model and artist. Being able to capture and portray these postures and emotions is my greatest aim.
