Art Description

Painting: Oil, Gesso, Acrylic, Ink, Graphite on Wood.

Each painting that I create is a unique dance with a variety of materials, unique to each work. I often refer back to traditional painting methods when priming the surface and preparing the paints. One of my preferred mediums is egg tempera, which i prepare myself from scratch in the same way that the renaissance masters would have done. I always use oils and inks in my work. The quality of these mediums enables me to build up subtle and rich layers, from which my poetic images appear. Each work is always a battle between exposing and suppressing different areas until the perfect balance of colour and form is achieved.
This mixed media paintings explores the complex nature of insects and nature.
The works show a pair of insects facing against each other in a background of wild florals and expressive colour against more muted tones.
The backgrounds are made of delicate tones of antique white, pale and shiny tones of black.
Each work in this series has been painstakingly made up with both opaque and translucent layers, gold leaf details and subtle textures that gives an irreverent edge to the works, they are bold and seductive embedded with complex emotion.

Inspired by vintage images of insects and bees, the patterned flowers and nature become one.
An invitation to be taken to a magical land full of lush plants, insects, flowers and vegetation.
