ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Hilman is known for his black-and-white works depicting various animal gestures such as mice, cats, fish, birds and animals that appear strange, from an anthropocene perspective or looking at the influence of human actions on the natural surroundings, depicted with a gloomy nuance, surreal, dramatic. According to Hilman, taken from several sources, the term Ommatidia (plural) refers to a group of combined vision or compound eyes in arthropods such as insects, crustaceans and millipedes. Ommatidia are a combination of single units of light receivers or receptors which are usually referred to as ommatidium (single) which are arranged into one large unit whose number can reach up to 20,000 units. And related to the exhibition context of the existing works, the term Ommatidia is intended as a symbolization and/or representation of "the way of looking at, observing, understanding, assessing the insect race". In this exhibition, apart from paintings on canvas, Hilman also made a storyless art book whose pages contain black-and-white exploration drawings with the title "Innersects" which were printed in limited quantities. In volume 1 of this book with 108 picture pages, he presents the subject of a series of relationships between insects and humans which tend to be gloomy.
