Insomnia: Vase of Flowers Against Salmon Pink Wall Painting

This is a 4am painting of an entirely imaginary vase of flowers, created recently when I couldn't sleep. I enjoy painting in the silence of the early morning, as the cold toned light seeps slowly through the blinds in my front room. These wee still life compositions help me get my thoughts in order, preparing for the day. This particular artwork features a leafy floral arrangement, with fattened easter lily blossoms sharing a vase with queen annes lace, puffy orange reeds, tiny, tightly clustered, imaginary cornflower blue blooms and exuberant pops of eucalyptus. The short, fat bottomed vase is inspired by a conversation about the curious properties of alexandrite, with its light reactive color shifting super powers. The wall behind the vase is a delightfully inconsistent pink, with various tones of salmon and coral dancing and shifting in the light. The flat, chalky texture of the gouache contributes beautifully to the overall feel of the piece and shows off the brush strokes effectively.
