While capturing a likeness is an essential and sometimes challenging aspect of portraiture, I find myself equally concerned with portraying personality, mood and spirit. For me, a successful portrait conveys the emotional and psychological state of the subject, and engages the viewer on this level. In the painting Ad Lucem (Into the Light), the difference in posture and expression of the two subjects adds emotional depth and tension to the painting. The strong contrast of light and shadow is used to emphasize the mood and to evoke the gesture of emergence suggested by the title.
