About The Artwork

This study of a landscape on the Isle of Skye, Scotland was created from a personal photo in my Edinburgh studio. After hiking the Scotland highlands for 3 weeks, I spent 6 weeks in Edinburgh at the St. Margret House art center. There I created numerous paintings of my Highland travels. In the studio I mixed my own super-saturated gouache paints. The brilliant colors in this series reflects the landscape as well as the quality of the material. The painting combines fresh brush work with the bold colors found in the Scottish landscape. This series invokes van Gogh and his sense of light as well as sumi-e painting techniques. My aim for these smaller studies is to make complex color images with as few marks as needed - and to make each mark do as much as it can.

My art works are products of the media I ingest. I think of the information I absorb as fodder for imagination. The richer the information, the more complex the results. The most intriguing aspect of the creative process is the formation of ideas. I believe in part it is our responsibility to seek out quality information for a healthy imagination, but I also believe our intentions are equally important. Our intentions invite the Muse. They color and shape her guidance. "If a man comes to the door of poetry untouched by the madness of the Muses, believing that technique alone will make him a good poet, he and his sane compositions never reach perfection, but are utterly eclipsed by the performances of the inspired madman." - Socrates (399 BC, Classical Athens) FROCK GALLERY frockgallery.com @frockgallery
