It Belongs in a Museum Painting

I love movies. It's not the action or excitement that thrills me (although it often helps), but the way an imaginary world is brought to life. A pure artistic vision made real. In order to achieve this a team of people needs to share a purpose; a director, writers, cinematographers, actors, prop makers, set builders, editors... all working together under a common purpose. My paintings are a small scale celebration of this process, recreating the mood and feeling of films that have particularly inspired me. I make the props, I build a set, I compose and frame the shot before rendering a classical still life in paint. Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of my favourite movies and I've known for a long time that I just had to create this painting. Filled with iconic props from the first Indiana Jones movie this painting gathers together our favourite adventurer's hat, whip, sand bag along with the infamous Chachapoyan Golden Idol (which of course, belongs in a museum). I created a number of the props in this piece using a wide variety of methods. The bottle label was printed and applied to a glass bottle, the idol was modelled and 3D printed using a computer. The hat was purchased and artificially aged and the bowl for the dates turned on a lathe. The floor was sculpted in clay before being painted to look as if it had been there for 1000 years or more. These works are created using a traditional oil painting style. Working on canvas board: a grisaille underpainting is completed before coloured oil paints are applied. This traditional process compliments the classical nature of still life works and produces an interesting juxtaposition between the modern content and traditional composition present in my paintings.
