ABOUT THE ARTWORK
What is it about a portrait that draws the viewer in? Is it the colors, the lighting, the subject? I argue it is about the emotion. In this moody piece I’ve drawn myself, eyes red from crying, hair blue to symbolize my mental health, a black background to reflect isolation, and plant life to show growth in the middle of pain. I see triumph in this image but an ordinary viewer may see depression or anger. Both the viewer and I are correct. The truth you see in the painted eyes is a reflection of your own.
