VIEW IN MY ROOM
Iya Agba Sisi in Yoruba Language means Grand mother or very elderly woman dressed up as a young maiden (the Sisi) (The Upper Part of the background is white) Ok... This subject is about the maidens of decades ago in their Sunday Best or Party Dress in the 1940s to early 1960. I have had this photograph taken in a studio in the 1950s before I was born few years after. It was in black and white of a woman in a regal dressing style of those days. You will notice a touch of the British (western influence) -the round shaped glasses, -the modest wrist watch, -eclectic handbag on the floor and -the Roman sandals/shoes that complete this outfit of a Yoruba woman. The Yoruba woman's party outfit (from South Western Nigeria) has not changed much lately. Decades back, you had the top - the Buba- with a different color and type of fabric, different from the wrapper adorning the waist downwards. You have a 3rd element, the sash - the Iborun- which is slung over a shoulder, meant to be used against the scorching sun. At times tied around the hips as a second layer. Today, the modifications demands that the top and the wrapper must color match with same type of fabric BUT the Iborun still tend to be in Aso Oke (locally sewn over the ages in the traditional sense of it.) So this studio shot was a hybrid of African and Western influence with all the elements complementing; at that time and even today. I had to paint this for posterity...

Since I am in semi retirement, I decided to brush up my creative skills that include painting, design, crafting and more.. These were hibernating as I pursued other careers.of over 30 plus years in the other industries. My works would be a buffet. If you could ask me of my artistic or painting style, media or the subject or a theme that aught to be my staple, I would rather leave those for now. The current thing is simply what is attached to my name! At this time, artistic freedom is it. I want to be cathartic and explore here and abroad. My reflections of tortuous past and victories and the present.. Where I see a semblance across the world of the past and present, as long as they give me joy and hopefully they resonate with like minds as collectors. So my day would have been made, that I have travel companions of this life in such people. For the curious, may be with time, you could label my style or noticed a recurring leaning of my thoughts, strokes of the brush or techniques, varied subjects and preferences. I just want to be free. My name presently is my Style. https://muyiwaosifuye.com/collectibles/
