About The Artwork

**NOTE: This piece is committed to an exhibition and will not be available for shipping before May 31, 2018.** This piece is a meditation on "justice" in many languages, in the hope of justice in every land. Language include the following (transliterated as required): English, Japanese, Russian, Hebrew, Swahili, Cantonese, Hindi, Welsh, Arabic, Albanian, Slovenian, and Māori. Since I was born in the 1970s, I do not have personal memories of the struggles for civil rights or the war in Vietnam. Right now feels to me like the most difficult and hopeless time in my lifetime, both domestically and around the globe. And so painting becomes a surrogate for hope, its creation an act of hopefulness. My history with choral singing, a love of travel, and personal emotional explorations come to the fore. Well-trained choirs often since in many languages, and decades of choral singing reminds me both of the power of words and the universality of human aspirations. Traveling to different lands reminds me of the core warmth, generosity, and friendliness of humankind, and in spite of divisions between and within us, our future is shared.

A native of San Antonio, I recently lived in San Francisco for 18 years and previously lived in New York and Paris. I am deeply committed to city culture both today and through the centuries, especially through the lenses of architecture, music, literature, history, and of course, art. While I appreciate abstraction and distilling to essences, I am more excited by the richness of complex layering and simultaneous meanings.
