About The Artwork

The site of the famous moaning scene in 'When Harry Met Sally'. Katz's has been around since 1888 as a Jewish staple. It almost lost it's lease a couple years ago, and negotiated a deal with developers. The future is never certain. It was my intention to capture and preserve the essence and unique qualities of a city that is quickly disappearing by the forces of progress as it generic-trifies. Old architecture often coupled with graffiti, grime, and a European sensibility, has set the stage for many movies and romantic dreams in the best city in the world. I’ve indicated the date the image was created (on-site), the location, and often the outdoor temperature of the session in an effort to remember the feeling of the experience. Some places still exist, while others are on the verge of disappearing, and many others are just memories now. More work can be seen at www dot KovalFineArt dot com

I went to the San Francisco Art Institute. I'm a fine artist and professional photographer in NYC and LA. In my artwork, I try to execute a compelling visual element that contains qualities of mystery, beauty, and narrative within abstraction or simply by altering a person's expected perception. I like to work in analog mediums such as oil, watercolor, ink, graphite, and charcoal. Most of my works are done on rag paper, board, porcelain, canvas, and other substrates. Some of my work is temporary, and I try to photographically capture the process of a transformation with liquids that are introduced to a chemical process so the only record of this is the photograph I have taken - inevitably it becomes a type of performance art, document.
