About The Artwork

THE WINNING COMMISSION PAINTING The commission on the final of Landscape Artist of the Year is judged in the final along side the painting created in the four hour timescale. With this artwork, I had roughly two weeks to complete a painting. The idea was to see what the artist could do in a short period of time, and then over a longer timescale. I was taken to Kilchern Castle in Scotland. This is a ruined structure on a rocky peninsula at the northeastern end of Loch Awe, in Argyll and Bute. It was first constructed in the mid-15th century as the base of the Campbells of Glenorchy, who extended both the castle and their territory in the area over the next 150 years. After the Campbells left Kilchurn fell out of use and was in ruins by 1770. Whilst I was here I completed a number of different drawing and painting studies to develop back home. We filmed in the early morning from 4.30 in August- and the area was silent, remote and had a wonderful cloudy mist hanging over the Glen. My aim was to capture this atmosphere. i went on to produce three painting studies. This one shows the largest of the paintings and the more refined. It had more of a focus on the loch and the castles location within in.

Tom Voyce (b. 1989) is an established UK painter with international exposure. His subject matter comprises of a variety of different themes such as airports, railway stations, roads and bridges and other places of transit. Voyce’s compositions consistently demonstrate an interest in the formal elements of composition: structure, perspective, shape and light. His paintings are accounts of fleeting moments within a landscape; the fall of light on a building, or the shadows cast by a motorway flyover. The strength in these pieces lies not in their faithful depiction of a landscape, but in their suggestion of a sense of place, of being present within a particular space at a particular moment. Artists such as Edward Hopper and Richard Diebenkorn have been immensely influential in his development, as have more contemporary artists- American painter Ben Aronson amongst others. Hopper's proverb, "if you can say it in words, then there's no reason to paint it", forms a principal part of my attitude towards the uniquely communicative purpose of art. His latest body of work entitled 'In Transit' is influenced by travel and place, exploring the landscapes and cityscapes of Canada, the United States, Fiji and New Zealand. www.tom-voyce.com tomrlvoyce@gmail.com
