Meet Kimiko. She put on her kimono and hung lanterns to celebrate Obon, the Japanese Festival of Souls. This event commemorates ancestral spirits that come home to visit. Lanterns and fires are lit to help guide them. This Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral places to visit and clean family graves, much like El Dia de los Muertos [Day of the Dead] in Latin American countries. Kimiko's owl friend symbolizes wisdom and patience. The kimono and owl are hand-folded using Japanese papers; the kimono is from Yuzen Washi paper, which has traditional patterns and has metallic gold accents. The lanterns are hand crafted with the same kind of paper. The stand of bamboo is painted with sepia ink. A Certificate of Authenticity is included.

Born on the West coast of the US and raised in upstate New York State I now live in the American Southwest in Tucson, AZ. Making art was my first love as a child, and art continues to impact my life every day. Although I grew up in a small town I had a lot of artistic influence from my family; my father loved art & played musical instruments, one of his brothers was a professional artist, my mother always encouraged making hand-made gifts and cards, and two of my five sisters are also artists.
