Being a city girl from India, I was quite surprised and fascinated hearing a drumming noise in the backyard of my suburban home in the US. After a bit of exploration, I found this gentleman head-banging on the trunk of the magnolia tree, a Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Upon looking up in the modern repository of all knowledge, otherwise known as Google, I now know that the Great Spotted Woodpecker spends much of its time climbing trees and chiseling into it to find food or excavate nest holes. It also drums on dead trees and branches at about,10-16 strikes per second, to maintain contact between paired adults and to advertise ownership of territory.

This is an original watercolor painting on Arches 140 lb. cold press paper. It comes signed on the front bottom corner.

Unframed painting size: 10 x 8 in.

After a career in Advertising in India, when I relocated to the United States, the love of Fine Arts led me to go to the library, check out a vast array of books and self-teach myself the finer nuances of painting in oil and watercolor. My subjects of painting are usually interesting views of nature. Anything which stimulates my creativity or captures my imagination through its shape, color, texture or form becomes a focus for my work.
