About The Artwork
An oil painting from life of a small Krishna figurine. I always had a tenderness for this poor statuette that due to a moment of inattention from the painter will live its life heavily wall-eyed. It contrasts with the perfection of the rest of the small figurine and gives it a very pensive burdened look. The painting interrogates the reverence and sacredness of religious figurines in contrast with their mass-produced status as trinkets sold in new-age shops. They are beautiful intricate objects that in any other human epoch could have been seen as great, if tiny, works of art. Today they are just mass-produced objects with very little value other than the one their owner can project into. I was hoping that by creating an outsized portrait for the statuette I might give it back some of the original sacredness afforded to an age-old deity. I also wanted to highlight some of the imperfections that give it personality as an individual object.

Antoine Quairiat is a Belgian painter currently residing in Buenos Aires. He creates mainly realist figurative works involving a play with the idea of representation, often by subverting the subject or adding a narrative layer in the composition. All his works are painted directly from life and are therefore usually simple calm compositions. They draw the viewer in, inviting serene projection into the paint layer They present a concrete subject but always leave a void to be filled by the viewer. All paintings on canvas or linen use a traditional Flemish Painter's recipe for preparing the support and are mounted on braced panels. This ensures great stability and longevity to the works.
