Painting: Mixed Media on Canvas. Solid Wood Stretcher Frame 20mm (the borders are also painted) Ready to hang thanks to the stretcher frame and a wire Original paining Comes with a certificate This painting is part of the Corona-Stories series; Tranquil Cities, Longing to go Outside Did you ever wonder what the world would look like if you were the size of an insect? Like in the story of ‘Eric’ (by Godfried Bomans)? As a child, Elise didn’t know Godfried Bomans, so Paul Biegel’s story “The Little Captain” fed her imagination. Especially the chapter where the children reach the island of ‘Big and Growth’. She made a beautiful large painting in acryl with happy yellow and orange colors. In the sky she incorporated text fragments in silver colored leaf metal. Combining text and paintings is very inspiring to me. Writers basically do the same thing painters do: create an alternative universe without boundaries. Tahereh Mafi is a master of this. I will quote a small part of the text that inspired me to make this painting: His story inspired me to use parts of the text in the forest with leaf metal. The atmosphere and appearance of the artwork are, as with a real forest, strongly influenced by the incidence of (sun) light.

Have you ever considered how special it is that we can read? Text is nothing but a series of characters in a row, to which we have assigned meanings. We can experience a whole range of feelings and emotions just by looking at those signs. From an early age I have been fascinated by letters. When I look at letters, I see beautifully designed figures. What I find so fascinating is that we don’t or hardly don’t see those figures anymore, once we can read. You are immediately transported to the world behind the letters. Based on this fascination, I want to show how text and image intertwine in my head. How they enter into a symbiosis with each other. I do this by making paintings in which I interweaves image and text. I use gold leaf and silver leaf that reflect the light in a different way each time you walk by. This brings the painting to life and makes it look different every time you look at it.
