The medium for this original artwork is encaustic. The wax is heated to 200 degrees then painted on wood. A torch is used to bind each layer of wax together. The raven is painted with India ink. An encaustic painting provides great texture and an intensity in color. If you love ravens, this is a must have!

Rachel Nelson is an encaustic artist. Encaustic art is an ancient technique dating back 2000 years to the Greeks. Enkaustikos is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in”. Encaustic painting is done using natural elements of molten beeswax and damar resin which is crystallized tree sap. From the first moment Rachel touched the flame of a torch to the encaustic wax, she was mesmerized by the transformation of the wax in form and texture. She loves the unpredictability of what the flame unfolds and how the molten wax moves across the canvas. Rachel has studios in Washington and Arizona.
