About The Artwork

In some of my work, the source of the content is not clear. However, when I think about others, such as Last Judgment, I know exactly how my frame of mind and specific life experiences have affected the content of my work. Last Judgment is very personal and reflects a relationship crisis as well as reactions to being judged and overwhelmed with negative criticism. The feeling of this painting is like being naked on a stage: alienation, turmoil, or powerlessness with upside down people reflecting a disoriented psychological state. The painting has a Biblical ambience and initially began with Cerberus, the three-headed dog from Greek mythology, but was painted out as the work developed. The composition has a misty vacant center, while a pair of bound, upside down human forms twist in the wind and are threatened by mechanical forms and vague implements of torture to the left and a Hellish fire below. Recurring bud shapes at the base of the painting can be read as abstracted people or relate to James Ensor’s, 1889, Christ’s Entry into Brussels, where a packed crowd judges and taunts Christ. Trapeze lines or acrobatic forms intersect with drippy, ribbon-like lines while yellow ladder-type structures work their way up a green mountain. An upside down heart, or phallus, is situated in the upper right-hand corner and the palette is dominated by a smoky gray color. The emotional force of works such as Last Judgment may also derive, in part, from another phenomenon which Rudolf Arnheim, author of Art and Visual Perception, identifies. He notes that a closed space, such as the square canvas, creates “a balancing center and organizes around it,” and that when an artist decides not to support that “centricity,” by having an empty center, “the psychological connotations of floating in the nowhere, in a space where no one place differs from the next, exert their bliss or terror artistically when an anchorage is explicitly represented as being denied.”

I maintain a studio in an artist colony in Los Angeles, California. Much of my recent work reflects on contemporary society and the political upheaval currently featured on the news. My interpretations are combined with my unconscious and become self-portraits of sorts- of a dark and quirky inner life. No one meaning predominates, only states of ambiguity, where strong undercurrents of emotion combine with murky, dream-like scenes of danger and destruction and contribute to a disjointed sense of unease in an unpredictable world.
